17. What denatures Immunocal? 

In the late 1970s, when Dr. Gustavo Bounous was studying the newly discovered immuno-enhancing properties of undenatured whey protein (later named Immunocal), he came to a road block - the whey protein powder he had been receiving from a European supplier stopped exhibiting these amazing results.  

For two long years Dr. Bounous struggled to replicate the immune boosting results and find an answer as to why the whey protein powder had stopped working. Finally he learned that the requirements of cheese making had changed in Europe and the whey powder was now pasteurized at above 72 C (161 F). Heat was destroying the fragile disulfide bonds in cysteine molecules denaturing whey protein and rendering it useless for raising glutathione.

In order to keep your Immunocal undenatured and bioactive when mixing it there are several DO NOT tips to keep in mind:

  • Do not use liquids above body temperature to mix Immunocal.
  • Do not use your kitchen blender - mechanical stress destroys cysteine as well.
  • Do not let your mixed Immunocal sit on a counter for more than 15 minutes.
  • Do not let mixed Immunocal sit in the sunshine if you absolutely have to leave it sitting.
  • Do not use freshly washed and thus hot cups right out of your dishwasher.
  • Do not expose Immunocal powder to air (oxygen) for longer than required to mix it - that is do not leave the powder in the cup overnight to mix it in the morning.


Following these simple instructions will ensure that you are consuming undenatured whey protein with bioactive cysteine that is scientifically proven to raise and maintain glutathione levels.
